Color in Color – Stencil Fun with Gelli Arts® by Birgit Koopsen

Hello and welcome to
the Gelli Arts® blog! It’s Birgit here today sharing a fun technique using
stencils on the Gelli Arts® gel printing plate.

It’s quite a simple technique to create color in color prints with stencils.

This technique works
best when using stencils with larger open spaces.

Start with applying a
layer of acrylic paint to the gel plate, then place the desired stencil on top.

Place a sheet of
printer paper on top and rub firmly to remove as much of the paint from the
open spaces as possible. If needed, use a baby wipe to remove any remaining
paint.

Now take some
contrasting colors and apply them to the open areas using a make-up sponge.

If you want to add
extra texture you can use a stamp or a flexible texture plate. Apply acrylic
paint to the stamp using a brayer, then stamp on top of the contrasting color.

Now carefully remove
the stencil.

If you are using open
paints with a longer drying time you can pull the print right now. If parts of
your paint are already dry it is better to do the following extra step and let
all the paint dry.

When the paint on your
gel plate is dry, apply a thin layer of (transparent) white acrylic paint (or
another color if you like) and pull the print while the paint is still wet.

Thank you for stopping
by and please tag us on social media with #gelliarts when sharing your own results. We would love to
see them!

Happy Printing!

  1. What happens if I don't use the final white layer? If the final layer is necessary could I use a transparent gel medium instead of paint?
