Hello and welcome to
the Gelli Arts® blog. It’s Birgit here and today I
am going to show you how you can create a gel printed quilt in your art
journal in just a few easy steps.
Here’s what you need:
Art journal or loose
paper (heavy card or watercolor paper), Gelli Arts® mini square gel plate,
Acrylic paint, texture plates, stencils, stamps, acrylic block with a grid,
(die) cut paper shapes, repositionable tape, pens, and paint markers.
Start by determining the middle of your page. Don’t worry about the pencil lines, you won’t
see them when you’re done printing. Place the gel plate on the acrylic block
with the grid. Apply acrylic paint to the gel plate and print the first block
in the middle of your page.
Work from there and
fill the whole page with colored blocks.
Use texture plates to
create patterns in the paint on the gel plate and print a second layer on top of
the previous blocks. Do this with all the blocks.
Now take some
stencils. Place them on top of the paint on the gel plate and use a sheet of
copier paper to remove the paint from the open areas. Then remove the stencil
and print a third layer on every block.
Cut shapes from
copier paper and use them as masks. Use can die cut or hand cut the shapes. Use repositionable tape to keep them in
place. Then print the final, solid block of paint, on top of the masks.
If you want to add
more details you can place the negative of the die cut shapes to mask the areas
around the shape and stamp in the open area.
When the paint is dry,
use permanent pens and paint markers to add doodles and marks. Finish the page with
some splattering and a quote.
Thank you so much for
stopping by!
Happy printing!
Birgit

Nice- I never really knew how to best use the mini plates, I tried using them for stickers (not bad at all), printing on fabric (a bit small for good quilt blocks, but intent to use them for applique) shrink plastic earrings (need to bake them first to see the result), but this is definitely something I need to try…
When you print on fabric do you use a special paint? What kind of fabric have you used?
Sorry for the late answer, but Jacquard fabric paint and actually, screen printing inks are lovely- more clear colours, but I haven't washed everything yet, so try them out first. I just use natural canvas, or pastel cottons to print on
Beautiful! Thanks for the detailed instruction, I am always looking for new things to try with the gel plates. Looking forward to seeing your next project.
Thank you Gelli Arts and Birgit you're awesome!
Wonderful idea and tutorial. I wish I had a small Gelli Plate.
Thanks so much from Germany
